ALTERNATION’S SERENGETI EMPRESS Reigns Supreme in G1 Kentucky Oaks

Coming into the race with four stakes wins, including two G2s, SERENGETI EMPRESS ran them off their feet to win the $1.25 million Kentucky Oaks-G1 by 1 3/4 lengths. Breaking from post 13, the 3-year-old filly from the second crop of ALTERNATION broke alertly to clear the field and secure the lead by the first quarter. Cruising on the front end, SERENGETI EMPRESS ran the opening quarter in :23 1/5 and had stretched her lead to three lengths with a :46 3/5 half-mile. As is her style, Jockey Jose Ortiz had her still running comfortably up front as they reached the top of the stretch, and then repelled a late challenger to win going away on a drying out track at Churchill. SERENGETI EMPRESS defeated four Grade 1 stakes winners, including champion Jaywalk and three-time G1 winner Bellafina. Last year at two, she won the Pocahontas S.-G2 by a record-setting 19 1/2 lengths for her third stakes win, and then in her seasonal debut this year went wire-to-wire to win the Rachel Alexandra S.-G2 by 4 1/2 lengths. Lifetime record: 8-5-0-0, $1,037,120. O-Joel Politi. B-Tri Eques Bloodstock, LLC. T-Tom Amoss.
