New Graded Performer and Stakes Horse Over the Weekend for BROKEN VOW
MENDED made her debut in a Graded stakes and ran a gutsy race to finish runner-up, only a head back, in the $200,000 La Canada S.-G2 at Santa Anita. Holder of 2017’s longest winning streak at 10, the 5–year-old mare by BROKEN VOW took the early lead to set a pressured pace in this one mile event. She still maintained the lead turning for home, then dug in between rivals in late stretch and battled to the wire to make very close. MENDED was coming off a 6 3/4-length win in the $110,000 Claiming Crown Glass Slipper S. at Gulfstream Park in early December. Lifetime record: 27-13-3-4, $271,690. O-Troy and Maritza Onorato. B-Sheltowee Farm, Mariah Thoroughbreds LLC & Pin Oak Stud LLC. T-John F. Martin.
FUTILE was runner-up in his second consecutive stakes after finishing just 3/4 length back in the $125,000 Fifth Season S. at Oaklawn Park. The son of BROKEN VOW set the pace going 1 1/16 miles on the main track but was caught in the final yards by an outside closer. FUTILE was coming off a closing runner-up finish in his Graded stakes debut, the Hawthorne Gold Cup H.-G3, finishing just 1/2 length back. Before that he put up back-to-back wins at Churchill and Keeneland. Lifetime record: 14-6-2-1, $181,120. O-Jackie Rojas and Chris Wilkins. B-Mr. & Mrs. Roy Jackson. T-Chris Hartman.
