2YO SERENGETI EMPRESS a Record-Setting Win in the G2 Pocahontas
Coming off a 13 1/2-length win in the Ellis Park Debutante S. last time out, SERENGETI EMPRESS wanted to improve on that margin of victory and did running off to win Churchill Downs’ Pocahontas S.-G2 by an astonishing 19 1/2 lengths. The 2-year-old filly from the second crop of ALTERNATION secured an automatic berth in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies-G1 after this “Win And You’re In” qualifier. SERENGETI EMPRESS broke sharply from her inside post in a field on 11 to assume the lead immediately and set solid opening fractions of :23.17 and :46.94. Still comfortably in front, she began to open up on the field around the final turn and then just extended her advantage through the stretch under a motionless Corey Lanerie. Even though she won by 19 1/2 lengths, her final time of 1:45.47 for the 1 1/16 miles was only .12 off her male counterparts ran in the Iroquois S.-G3 earlier on the card. According to Churchill Downs, her victory was a record for the Pocahontas and largest winning margin in a stakes race at the track since Rachel Alexandra won the 2009 Kentucky Oaks by 20 1/4 lengths. A $70,000 Keeneland September Yearling purchase by her current owner, SERENGETI EMPRESS won her debut by 5 1/2 lengths on July 4th. After an on-the-board finish in her second start in Saratoga’s G3 Schulyerville after her jockey dropped the whip, SERENGETI EMPRESS had rattled off two amazing performances. Lifetime record: 4-3-0-0, $187,870. O-Joel Politi. B-Tri Eques Bloodstock, LLC. T-Tom Amoss.
