SERENGETI EMPRESS a Hard-Fought Runner-up in G1 Test

Shortening back to seven furlongs for the first time since her Ellis Park Debutante S. win last August, SERENGETI EMPRESS fought hard to the wire to finish runner-up, only 1/2 length back, in the $500,000 Longines Test S.-G1 at Saratoga. Breaking from the inside post, the 3-year-old filly by ALTERNATION took the lead soon after the break. She ran the opening quarter in :22.19 and the half in :44.28. Joined by the eventual winner with a furlong to go, the pair battled tooth and nail to the wire, with SERENGETI EMPRESS only coming up short in the final few strides. The final clocking of 1:21.26 was the fastest since Capote Belle went 1:21.08 in 1996. The Kentucky Oaks-G1 winner has now finished first or second in four of five starts this year, three at the highest level. Lifetime record: 10-5-2-0, $1,267,120. O-Joel Politi.
