SERENGETI EMPRESS Retires After Runner-up in Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint-G1

After an illustrious career that included victories in the seven-furlong Ballerina S.-G1 and the 1 1/8-mile Kentucky Oaks-G1, and earnings of over $2.1 million, SERENGETI EMPRESS retires after a runner-up finish in the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint-G1. At two, the now 4-year-old filly by ALTERNATION won her debut by 5 1/2 lengths. She also was a 13 1/2-length winner of the Ellis Park Debutante S., and a record-setting 19 1/2-length winner in the G2 Pocahontas S. SERENGETI EMPRESS kicked off her 3-year-old campaign with a 4 1/2-length win in the G2 Rachel Alexandra and went straight to the front to win the Kentucky Oaks-G1 by 3 1/4 lengths (pictured). Second when cutting back in distance for the G1 Acorn S. next out, she dueled with eventual two-time champion that year Covfefe in a game second in the G1 Test S. She would end that year’s campaign placing in the G1 Breeders’ Cup Distaff behind Blue Prize and eventual Champion Midnight Bizou, and was an Eclipse Finalist for 3YO Filly. SERENGETI EMPRESS was equally impressive this year at four, with a record-setting 6 1/4-length dominating performance in the G2 Azeri S. in her second start of the year. She was a front-running winner of Saratoga’s G1 Ballerina S. and missed by a nose in the G1 Derby City Distaff prior to her start in the Filly and Mare Sprint. Lifetime record: 19-7-5-1, $2,175,653.
