STAN THE MAN Puts in Valiant Runner-Up Effort in G2 True North

Stakes winner and Graded-placed STAN THE MAN took a slim lead near the eighth pole, but had it snatched away late and finished runner-up, only 1 1/2 lengths back of 10-time SW and G1 winner Firenze Fire, in the 6 1/2-furlong True North S.-G2 at Belmont Park. The son of BROKEN VOW was always in contention racing no more than a length off the pace early. He slowly cut into the short lead, swung four wide turning for home to stick his nose in front, then battled to the wire in a gallant effort against a $1.9 million earner. Last year he closed out 2019 with a win in the 1 1/8-mile Queens County S., his first start back off a 197-day layoff, and also nearly went wire-to-wire in the $200,000 Westchester S.-G3, only to be caught in the final strides and finish a neck back as the runner-up. Lifetime record: 23-6-7-2, $436,374. O-Long Lake Stable LLC. B-Emma Quinn, Dermot Quinn, Scott Pierce & Debbie Pierce. T-John Terranova II.
