Two New 2017 Stakes Horses Over the Holiday Weekend

STARR BEAR, a 3-year-old filly by BROKEN VOW, earned her first blacktype with a runner-up finish in her stakes debut, beaten only a neck, in the Northbound Pride Oaks. Racing a mile on the turf at Canterbury Park, STARR BEAR sat behind the leaders early on. She split foes on the far turn, was pushed out five wide heading for home, and continued her rally through the stretch to make it a tight finish. STARR BEAR was coming off an allowance score at Fair Grounds in late March. Last year as a juvenile she placed at Churchill and Saratoga in her first two starts, then won her third start taking a Maiden Special Weight on the dirt at Belmont Park. Lifetime record: 8-2-1-3, $98,949. O/B-Donald R. Dizney. T-Brad Cox.

CLEAR THE RUNWAY, a racing veteran by BROKEN VOW, has now won or placed in eight stakes after placing in the Journal H., his first start of the season. He raced up close just behind the front three, kicked for home at the top of the stretch and ran on to the wire. CLEAR THE RUNWAY is a multiple stakes winner who has won or placed in 22 career starts and was a Maiden Special Weight winner and stakes-placed as a juvenile. Lifetime record: 36-7-5-10, $168,179.
