Whatever The Horses Need

We operate with a “Horses First” mentality at Pin Oak Stud. We are fortunate to have the facilities, amenities, and staff to offer the horses whatever they need, whether it is rehab, alternative training methods, or just time to be a horse. The Bernhards view their horses as part of the family and that mentality has transferred to everyone else on the farm.

Training Facilities

Training Track

Our 5-furlong training track has a similar dirt composition and drainage system as Churchill Downs. Our track maintenance crew trained under Keeneland’s esteemed team. We have our own starting gate to ensure that horses are comfortable in and around the gate.

Turf Gallop

The 5-furlong undulating turf gallop teaches horses balance and how to carry themselves by going up and down hills and in both directions around a bend.

All-weather arena

In 2023, we installed a 100×200 outdoor arena with all-weather footing. This is perfect for young horses as it allows them to perform different exercises and offers them a variety in their training schedule.

Wooded Trails

There is a 1.5-mile trail ride that goes through the woods. This teaches the horses to relax and trust their rider to guide them through whatever they come across on the trails, whether it’s a fallen log or a wild animal! This trail is also used heavily when the horses are first being broken in and are being longlined.

Field Training

Similar to the turf gallop, training in the field gets the horses comfortable with galloping up and down hills and relying on the riders’ directional guidance.

Rehabilitation Amenities

Learn more about the therapies that we offer in the our 6-part video series below.

Water Treadmill

Water treadmills are designed to relieve stress and promote healing and fitness. They allow a horse to exercise the same muscles, tendons, and ligaments used when galloping on the track without the concussion of the track’s surface.

Saltwater spa

Cold salt hydrotherapy for horses increases mobility and reduces swelling in the limbs. Regular sessions in cold saltwater help to strengthen the tendons and ligaments, making them more resilient to strain and reducing the risk of future injuries.

EuroXcisers

A Eurociser panel walker is a European-style horse exerciser that allows the horse to move freely and naturally. The speed and direction can be controlled, so this can be used as a cool down or exercise without a rider.

Turn-out time

Time spent in the field where the horses can just be horses is the most beneficial thing one can do. Our racehorses at the farm get turned out daily before training and, in the summer, stay outside overnight.

PEMF & Laser therapies

PEMF therapy stimulates the metabolism of the cell to improve circulation, reduce inflammation, etc. Class 4 laser therapy stimulates metabolic processes at the cellular level and is used to regenerate tissue and speed up healing.

Chiropractor, acupuncture, etc.

In addition to everything else, we also bring in chiropractors, acupuncturists, bodyworkers, and whoever else the horse requires to feel their best.
